The coolest, prettiest car I’ve ever seen is Marcello Gandini’s Lamborghini Miura, which changed everything when it debuted in 1966. It had a V12 mounted transversely behind the seats but in front of the rear axle, making it the first mid-engined road car. It had the most amazing styling I’ve ever seen, with eyelashes on the headlights and the Powerpuff Girls-like Miura Green as a color option. Here it is:

Only 765 Miuras were ever made, the last in 1973.

There’s now a new version of the Miura, created by new Lamborghini design head Walter de’Silva. While very close to the original, it doesn’t work where it differs, like at the horrible front wing or the silly bling wheels:

It’s just a concept, yes, and they might develop aesthetically more pleasing ways to create downforce, but still. Will this new Miura be as insanely cool in 2046 as Gandini’s Miura still is in 2006?

Does anyone know the Pantone codes for Miura green and Kawasaki green? I’m trying to figure out how they relate on the spectrum.

Italian V12 roadster dilemma

An existential question that’s been driving me crazy for over a year now: Zonda Roadster or MurciÃ©lago Roadster? The Zonda is clearly the more extreme of the two, with styling that hints at the first golden age of the supercar, when cars like the Miura and the GT40 were made. On the other hand, the MurciÃ©lago is an absolutely perfect evolution of Marcello Gandini’s original Countach design, a brutal, low-slung, menacing wedge.

I reckon the solution is along Jay Leno lines: buy both.

It appears I’m not alone with this problem. Here’s evo’s lovely comparison of the two.

UPDATE: I just found out that there are NINE Zonda Roadsters, total. Wow.

Count cars with V-12 engines, become cool.

Here’s a new way to kill time in true kindergarten fashion: count the number of cars equipped with V-12 engines you see during the course of a day. You’ll also have to recognize and name the car or else it doesn’t count.

This is what a V-12 engine looks like:

Of course you’ll never have the chance to count the exact number of cylinders. You’ll have to rely on your car knowledge and small “V12″ badges behind the front wheelarches.

My score today: one (a BMW 760i).

People with a score equal to or over 6 (excluding residents of Monte Carlo and similar cities) can consider themselves cool. Aston Martins and Lamborghinis are worth 2 points each. A BMW 850i is worth a whopping 6 points (don’t ask me why, I don’t particularly care for BMW’s, but the 850i is something special).

I used to count Soviet-made Volga sedans (18.8 MB WMV link) on my kindergarten commute, then compared the number of Volgas to the number of Mercedes-Benzes tallied on my bus ride. I’m not quite sure what the point was. It’s probably a guy thing.

The Cayenneification of Lamborghini

Rumor has it that Lamborghini is working on a diesel-powered Gallardo, using the V10 turbodiesel engine from the Volkswagen Touareg. Somehow I don’t think this is what Ferruccio Lamborghini had in mind when, as a successful tractor entrepreneur, he founded his supercar company.

Who on God’s green Earth will they sell it to? The Prius people? The get-a-tiny-European-car-with-a-diesel-engine-and-do-70-mpg people? Right. By definiton, diesel-engined cars cannot be mean ass motherfuckers. Supercars are supposed to be mean ass motherfuckers. So there you have it.

Please don’t do this.

Think of the Miura!
Think of the Countach!
Think of the Diablo!
Their V12’s will be turning in their, uh, engine compartments.

Men will always need a car to look forward to when they hit their midlife crises and diesel-engined “supercars” are not something to aspire to, period.
